A fluorescent lamp is a gas-discharged lamp that uses electricity to excite mercury vapour. The excited atoms produce ultraviolet light that then causes a phosphor to fluoresce, producing a visible light. Although mainly used in commercial buildings, fluorescent light fittings are commonly used in kitchens and garages in the home. Their benefit is they use less power for the same amount of light, the bulbs generally last longer and they do not give off heat unlike incandescent bulbs.
